About us

In 1986 german psychologists, who are working in the field of diabetes, founded the "Arbeitskreis Diabetes und Psychologie". They met once to twice a year for exchange of their experiences and for advanced professional training. In 1990 they founded the association Diabetes und Psychologie e.V. (for details see the articles of association), which actually has about 150 members, predominantly psychologists, some physicians, diabetes-counsellors and members of other psycho-social professions.

The tasks of the association are determined in their articles from January 3rd, 1991 under § 2 (purpose of the association) as follows:
"The tasks of the association are corresponding to the specific situation of children, adolescents and adults, suffering from diabetes. The purpose of the association is scientific research of psycho-social and educational aspects of this disease. This includes the development of concepts for counselling, care and education of diabetics and the training of persons, who are careing for them. The association goes to the public with her goals and concepts, contacts authorities and institutions. These goals are attained particularly by:

Button (1 KB) scientific conferences and publications dealing with psycho-social problems of diabetics
Button (1 KB) publication of evidence based guidelines for education and counselling of people with diabetes
Button (1 KB) initiate the research of the members and coordinate multi-center-studies
Button (1 KB) advanced training of persons, who care for diabetics by education, counselling and psychotherapy
Button (1 KB) initiate and support cross-professional cooperation of physicians and members of psycho-social professions, who care for diabetics."

The "Association Psychology and Behavioral Medicine within the German Diabetes Association" was proposed by some members of the association who where also members of DDG. The goals were to improve cooperation with physicians and to give them more chances for the engagement with the psycho-social aspects of diabetes. The execution board of DDG implemented the "Arbeitsgemeinschaft Psychologie und Verhaltensmedizin in der DDG" in february 1992 (see Geschäftsordnung).

Our association is open for all interested members of the DDG (for non-members of DDG as well). Speaker of the association is the chairman of the club "Diabetes und Psychologie e.V.". The club "Diabetes und Psychologie e.V." supports the work of the association financially, because there is no financial support by the DDG. Persons, who want to join the association for longer time are encouraged to become a member of the club "Diabetes und Psychologie e.V." (the subscription price is 20 € per year).

Actually the association meets twice a year, first on the occasion of the congress of DDG and second for a meeting in autumn. Normally the results of the meetings will be published.
